Trailblazing Scottish chef Jock Zonfrillo is bringing native Australian ingredients to a broader audience with the relaunch of Bistro Blackwood, now open on Adelaide’s Rundle Street.
The ‘all Australian’ bistro beneath Zonfrillo’s award-winning fine diner, Restaurant Orana, has emerged following a two week refit with a fresh lick of paint – a fun contrast of marshmallow pink and navy blue – and an eclectic mix of old-fashioned wooden chairs, booth seating, schoolhouse lighting and white marble tables, designed by Zonfrillo himself.
“We are giving the classic bistro an Australian accent,” says Zonfrillo. “It’s not your typical French or Italian bistro because it embraces indigenous Australian ingredients. The menu shares Orana’s DNA but at an approachable, everyday price.”
Dishes are playful riffs on bistro classics, such as a hearty 450g rib-eye served on the bone with pressed eucalyptus potatoes, with confident new additions including fire-pit kangaroo with broccoli leaves, quinoa and spiced yoghurt. As Adelaide’s ‘all Australian’ bistro, the menu also features an array of wholesome vegetarian dishes and a kids’ menu. Specials are a true sense of the word, with daily options adding extra variety to support regular patronage.
The menu runs beside a sharp local-leaning wine list with an emphasis on minimal intervention producers. Guests wanting to splash out beyond the 40-bottle list can order off Restaurant Orana’s 400-bottle spread, curated by sommelier Brent Mayeaux.
Restaurant Orana and Bistro Blackwood staff work in both restaurants to facilitate a cross-pollination of ideas and techniques, under the stewardship of restaurant manager Greta Wohlstadt and head chef Sam Christopher. In the bistro’s new open-style kitchen, chefs collaborate on the frequently changing menu, which draws from a wealth of native ingredients and organic and biodynamic produce from local suppliers.
Bistro Blackwood will be a creative space for its chefs to explore new combinations and further hone the skills and techniques developed at Restaurant Orana.
“As a restaurateur and a chef, it is imperative for me to give back to my staff and give them the tools to be successful when they leave the nest,” says Zonfrillo.
