NOMAD, Surry Hills’ restaurant and cellar door in the city, is launching the ‘NOMAD Wine School’ this July, a rotating series of one-off masterclasses dedicated to enhancing the public’s knowledge of wine styles, grape varieties, viticulture and winemaking history.
Courses will be hosted by NOMAD’s Director of Wine, Simon Howland to an intimate group of 20 people in the China Heights Gallery located directly above the restaurant and will offer wine education for the layman - fun, not fussy.
The NOMAD Wine School, a 5 ½ hour structured course, will be held once a month from Saturday 21 July, and will cover everything from the basics of wine tasting and appreciation to the impact of geography, climate and winemaker personality on wines from around Australia. The course will run from 11:00am to 4:30pm, with guests tasting between 10 - 12 wines throughout the day - all of which will be available for purchase at the end.
Lunch, as well as an afternoon cheese course, will be served by NOMAD in the gallery, featuring dishes such as a slow roasted lamb shoulder with chermoula and jersey yoghurt and BBQ eggplant with black garlic, pickled chilli and soft herbs. Similar to downstairs, the dishes will draw from the restaurant’s dynamic and seasonally driven menu and will be updated regularly over the course of the year.
For the wine lover with a little less time on their hands, NOMAD will also be offering a monthly 1 ½ hour weekday evening Masterclass. The Masterclasses will be shorter, more focused tastings and will hero a specific theme each month. These classes will run from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, launching on Tuesday 24 July with a NOMAD Winter Wines theme and will offer a fun and expert guided tasting of 6 wines alongside NOMAD charcuterie and cheese.
Since opening in 2013, NOMAD has celebrated Australia’s diverse wine community, with a list that spans the length of the country, showcasing the best small growers, producers and winemakers. “NOMAD invests a lot of time and effort into our wine offering,” says Howland. “These classes are a way of sharing our journey.”
The sessions will cost $250 for the full Saturday Wine School and $150 for an evening Masterclass and can currently be purchased via phone or email at email@example.com. Sessions will be available via direct purchase at nomadwine.com.au from mid-July onwards. A full schedule can be found below.
