Cape Mentelle, a founding Margaret River winery, will this month collaborate with outdoor chef and author Sarah Glover on a series of immersive events in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth
Hailing from Tasmania Sarah Glover has always gravitated to the outdoors. She’s been cooking professionally for more than 16 years but it was only four years ago that she combined her two loves and began creating magical feasts in the wild.
Cape Mentelle was founded in 1970, at the very beginning of the region’s establishment. Margaret River is one of the world’s most remote and pristine terroirs and home to some of Australia’s finest wines. Sustainability is at the heart of Cape Mentelle, the first winery in Western Australia to be accredited under the Entwine program.
Sarah’s strong connection with the ocean and cooking on beaches goes hand in hand with the ethos of Cape Mentelle and the geography of the Margaret River region. Her hands-on approach, gathering produce locally and cooking it over an open fire, is a unique experience of terroir. The natural environment expresses itself through her food, just as the natural environment expresses itself through Cape Mentelle’s wines. This reflection of the land is the basis of the partnership.
The events will take the form of long lunches at secret off-the-grid locations that will explore the richness of Margaret River, with a menu that is crafted to complement and accentuate the characteristics of Cape Mentelle’s award-winning wines. Sarah will highlight produce and ingredients including saltbush and marron from Western Australia set against stunning backdrops within the great outdoors.
Cape Mentelle’s Ben Cane said: “Sarah’s approach to wild feasting is relaxed and casual but simultaneously detailed and focussed. This reflects the paradox in the people of Cape Mentelle and our wines. While the lifestyle in this remote, rugged paradise is relaxed, our winemaking is a constant exploration of technique, the relentless pursuit of excellence and attention to detail.”
Sarah and the team at Cape Mentelle share a love for the land and a deep commitment to sustainability that underpins everything they do. For Sarah, the collaboration is about the meeting of minds:
“Cape Mentelle is an authentic brand, it’s homegrown. Everyone who works there is passionate about their region. I love being associated with people who are proud of what they do. I’m excited that they are trying to push boundaries and they are confident enough to allow me to explore freely and create.”
